Dublin based Composer, Performer & Educator Ian Smyth mixes his successful Tuition duties between his composition practice at “The Piano Studio” & here in Dublin. He has developed a successful method that a young students thrive upon by tailoring each student individual lesson to focus on instant positive rewards & the love for music. Whether its a famous film score, a popular song or classical piece the student is learning, the fundamentals of theory, technique & sight reading are applied without taking the fun out of learning how to play.

Recently, Ian MD’d the Jameson 9 Million Bottle celebrations at Dublin’s RDS while completing recording Drums for “The Southbank Satellites” debut release, the first single “All Of The Bad Things“ is on all streaming platforms.

August 2022, saw the release of his debut album, “Gaze Boketto-Day in a Life”, a 50 minute seven suite composition based on the first day in the life of a butterfly. An instrumentation ensemble of – Piano, Strings, Percussion & Synth that creates a soundscape alike to Filmscore & Ambient textures that brings this concept album alive. It is available on all streaming platforms & Bandcamp to purchase.

His latest Film Soundtrack for “Break Us” is a Percussion filled cacophony based on the style of Japanese Taiko drumming & is presently doing a successful festival circuit winning top production prizes at every stop. The score also features his most recent song “Goodbye“ guesting ‘Little Lost’ on vocals.

Commercially, Express Way Bus-Directed by John Moore, Three Ireland–Tackle Homelessness–Directed by Richie Smyth, Sona Vitamins-Feel Good- funk band, Hunky Dory-Satisfy Yourself – nod to Morricone. 2011 saw the award winning feature film “Rewind” directed by PJ Dillon for Carbon Films. The score also featured a song co-written with Thomas Walsh-Pugwash, and one half of Duckworth Lewis Method.

2014 saw reworking of the Sex Pistols “Anarchy in the UK” with a Choral Ensemble for SMA London. His orchestral score “The Mulbury Project” (2012) included an 8-minute suite, a sci-fi horror feature set in the near future, produced by Northern Ireland’s Heaven’s Gate Films.
Ian Thuillier’s “Driven” (2013), a short for Kennedy Films was short listed at Berlin Film. A simple piano score to back drop of one-mans fight against the banking crisis. His other shorts include award winning “The Wonderful Story of Kelvin Kind” (2005) for director Ian Power and Fastnet Films; “Man of Fire” (2004), directed by Keiron J. Walsh;

His many television credits include “Seacht” (2008), the first Irish language drama for the BBC directed by Rob Quinn for Tyrone Productions; the animated children’s series “Schrödinger’s Cat” (2007); and two seasons of the science series “Investigators” (2008/09) both produtions for RTE.

Ian got his first drum kit at the age of 8 and quickly progressed through to working with various bands and sessions in his early teens. He came to the attention of Paiste Cymbals & Sonor Drums in Dublin who asked him to do drum clinics and its through this he met the legendary drummer Dom Famularo who quickly became his mentor and inspired Ian to enroll at Boston’s Berklee College of Music to study Drums & Film Score. He graduated with a degree in Filmscore and Composition. His next step was to work for Renaissance Pictures working in the music edit department on film & television productions. He returned to Dublin to Compose music for film, adverts, perform & teach.
